I usually go on the Wednesday. No reason, I just do. It's only about an hour's drive for me so I'll be on the lemonade. :(

Actually, it was good fun meeting at a non-existent stand. Trying to identify people who have used a 30 year old Avatar photo was quite an enjoyable challenge. The only one who looked like his picture was Henry, and that was only because of the massive beard!

I, of course, am dashedly handsome in real life, unlike the ugly mug over there <<<<<<<

So Nik, Rob,

Let me get it right, you are both travelling down on the Wednesday, staying overnight and then going to the show on the Thursday and meeting at the Signworld stand (not a euro stand  ) Ok fine with us.

Rob are you looking at doing a bulk hotel/B&B booking somewhere ..... in which case if you are, Nik might not need to worry about booking a B&B and then we can all stay together at the same place and have a pyjama party ..... oooh no maybe not :lol1: getting slightly carried away there!! Not sure we could all cope seeing Rob in his pink fluffly bunny slippers & jim-jams  :lol1:

Nik, believe it or not, to get the train from Wellingborough to Brum means virtually circumnavigating the globe and changing trains in 37 different countries.

Speaking of the show, I got a brochure through the door yesterday - one that I requested at last year's show. Now that is bloody speedy service.

Anyway, I'll be wearing a carnation and carrying a copy of the Times. I'll meet you all under the clocktower. (<(

i think the best day would be to meet at the show around 2pm on wednesday at signwolrd stand. then head to the bar... :P
from here we can arrange to meet back up at hotel for all those staying over till thursday.

(thats if it is ok with everyone else?)

between now and end of this month, if your definately going to make it on said dates, reply to "this" thread. that way we can see about arranging some sort of bulk stay over near exhibition. if i can arrange a good deal, we woul need to pay this in advance, at least deposit of some sort?
thats IF we get a good deal. we will need to count heads in order for that to happen.

anyway, if your going reply and let us know so we can count heads.

I will be travelling up on the Tuesday and kipping in my camper for the all in price of about £5  Yes I am a tight git but while I have a camper, as the saying goes "HOME IS WHERE YOU PARK IT" :lol1: Why should I pay inflated prices just for a kip. Then its a 15 minute drive to the show on Wednesday (I even get a lie in as well) and arrive fresh as a daisy ready to pound the halls before the 3.5 hour drive home again.

Would be good to see the real faces, I did meet about 4 guys last year by literally bumping into them. (I don't think any of them post here anymore :( )

Two of us are heading up also, but haven't decided on the day yet, so we'd be more than happy to join the throng that seems to be amassing for a knees up. We were going to get the train up and back on the same day so we could have a few sherbets but would certainly consider driving now and staying overnight.

Rob keep us posted if you are making a group booking please.

So, how many have we got going now? I've lost count :-? If the majority are staying over night, we'd better make sure we can find somewhere before there's no room left at the inns. Either that or its a tent in the NEC carpark

Exactly my thinking. On the booking I mean, mind you, you're right on both counts :lol1: He did get to sleep next door to Bob Marley last year though :o

Wanderer, I think most ppl will be going Wednesday or Thursday. On the Thursday you tend to get the large print guys giving away huge posters and panels, stuff like that. They're pretty cool.

It was the Bob Marley room, not the actual guy :lol1:

I didn't come away with freebies last year, although I saw alot of ppl walking to their cars with prints etc. I'm not too bothered this year either. I should imagine it'd be useful for newbies though, especially anyone wanting to fill some wallspace in a workshop or shop. I think most of the large supplier stands give away packs with samples of vinyl, squeegees, things like that in, also useful if you're just starting out. I'm looking forward to seeing some of the new add-ons for the Epson printers, I think the company doing them was i-Sub.

We can't stay at your place then Brian, looks like we'll be about 50 miles away at this rate :lol1: Either that or its £200, padlock the minibar and not eat at the bar type of hotel. :o Bit cold to kip in the car :-?

Bob Marley room? Blimey, was their some exotic tobaco in the minibar?

The Travelinn places book up really quick. There are a couple of travelinn type places on the NEC site, but they were booked up 6 months before Sign UK.

Would have a look here still some rooms in places near the NEC...

If a few of you wanna stay in the same place you best get your fingers out!

how close is birmingham city centre to the nec?
there are a good few places available from about £60ish a night in the city.
holiday inns have a fair amount of rooms and also hotels.

crown plaza has rooms available, cheaper than last year if booked in next few days.. starts about £90

ive did online bookings for 5 rooms plus but nothing comes off... as far as discount for a party booking. guess that would have to be haggled over the phone. the thing is, i dont know how far that would get you anyway as the nearer the date bookings the prices go right up because they know they will shift the rooms anyway.. :-?

if we arrive at NEC on the wednesday and stay over, i think it is best to stay on the complex. (although expensive) thats if some of us are traveling by train or plane. i know phil and alison flew down and back last year...
what i mean is... we meet at show then head some place for food and drink.. if not local we have to taxi it to the hotel... then next day, if we wanted to go back into the show.. its a taxi back...
or if we got there by train or plane, we still have to travel back to NEC area as thats were airport etc is...

im not fussed, ill go with the flow... but if we want to get together it would be good if we are in same place or near enough. :D

Whats the maximum everyone is willing to pay for a night then?

Let me know and I'll scout about tomorrow, see who's offering what... need to know how many ppl are wanting to stay over as well obviously.

Also, who's going by car? We may as well sort out some sort of car pool or something, to go from the NEC to the hotel. I've got 6 spare seats (well, 5 as I already have a passenger) so anyone going by plane, train or being dropped off can always hitch a ride to the hotel... thats if you trust my driving

Going along the lines of what Robert has said though, the benefit of an onsite hotel is the free parking on the hotel complex, and its only a short bus ride into the NEC building. £90 isn't all that bad considering it so local to the show (about 5-10 minutes walk or a shuttle bus goes up and down there every 10 minutes)

Cheers, Dewi

Rob

I need a double room for me and her

Guess something between £50-£80 for the room

The premier ones that Brian is on about still have some in Birmingham North and some in Birmingham South

Though it would be good if we were all together
Somewhere central to all

Hi Carrie,
5 mins to clear the stand, could do with you at the end of the show on Thursday.

Mind you after 5 mins work we would spend 3 hrs trying to get off the car park, I reckon I might just have to insist on a hours lunch break to meet everyone at the bar.

Birmingham beer is know way better than lancs beer. I'm Bury born and bred, brought up on lancs ale. The ale in the midlands tastes somewhat watered down. I feel sorry for them really lol :D dont knw what they are missing.

Has anyone had their tickets through yet?
Reason I'm asking is that they have written to me inviting me to register for tickets even though I've already done so on the website.

I don't want to queue up with all the students for 3 hours to get in!

Oh, and Dewi, I'm getting me barnet cut tomorrow in the vain hope that I won't be compared to a certain car enthusiast!

i have been doing a search and prices vary allot, biggest problem i see is how near/far from NEC.
there are multiple hotels available ranging from £60 to £210 per night.
the closer you are to the NEC the higher the prices get.
city centre of Birmingham has a good few available, that's like holiday inns etc costs about £65 upwards but some have over 10 rooms available...
my thoughts are as has been said below.
those traveling by car should be fine, but those by train etc will find added costs in taxis after NEC to hotel then back again to come home. or even if they are going back into nec day two like myself...
there is the hassle of us all getting under one roof, finding each other etc
so with that in mind... and taxi costs etc would one a bit dearer on location within walking distance be out the question?

anyway... we are running short on days to decide.

if you think a city centre hotel ranging from £60-£75 for the night is best suited say aye! :lol1:

if you think paying more to walk out NEC to walk into top hotel on complex costing £110 for the night... is best they say yeh! :lol1:

any thoughts?

I'm not in favour of running all over the shop as it were
I think most of us will have done enough travelling without getting lost in the centre....... so something on site with not too much walking and with the added advantage of parking might be the ticket

However if the majority swing for the centre then I'm willing to adapt

i agree 100% john... i dont mind paying more for the on complex loaction so i can go back in the next day at ease, but will go with the flow....
anyone elsewith thoughts please reply so we can make a decision. i think if we make a decision no later than tuesday around 6pm on the hotel. majority gets the vote and we can shout for rooms then?

sound ok?

I would agree with John but as said go with the flow but I think maybe on site with parking sorted, cause as far I as recall most are driving and I also recall alchol was mentioned so after that non of us would want to be driving too soon

I think putting the time limit on it is the way to go Rob

How about Wednesday 6pm?
(just to throw a spanner in the works) :D
Just because I think most folks will be returning Tuesday and might be playing catch up before they log on

What do you think?

i agree john... my only worry is the prices go higher by then.. lol
i did a search for a hotel holding mre than 10 rooms available just now and got the one i was in last year. £111 so i know its very close on complex etc but i had to pay £200 last year coz i left till last minute and i guess its just the closer it gets the higher you pay! :-?
i guess a day isnt gonna kill it....

ok so show of hands folks... city or complex?

please only reply if you are definately going and how many are going?

Complex

2 people for the complex as we are going back home on Wednesday night, not so much that I cant afford the hotel. But we are mega busy and by the time you add the hotel to getting an early flight back in the morning adds about £350 to the trip. But we are going back on the 8.30pm flight so should be able to get round everyone before we leave

no worries adrian your more than welcome mate...

hammy, many folk will be in each room mate? 1 or 2... or?
just so i know on heads as oppossed to rooms.
when its decided on an exact number i will call them by phone and see what if we get anything off for a group booking, from there i will email you all a link to pay online or over the phone direct.

so far i have 2 hotels on the grounds of the NEC... few hundred yards apart ide "guess" but i am sure there is a constant stream of NEC/hotel buses taking folk direct to hotel for free.. even at that they are within walking distance. :D guess that depends how early you land in the bar

hi folks... bit of bad news here.... :-?

well basically the time thing is running out on bookings and the longer we leave it the worse its gonna get... but!
as i said in a post on sunday.. there is various rates depending on locality of hotel. the best one i could find closest to the NEC was the "crowne plaza" that i stayed in last year.

when i did a search on sunday the rooms wrere available at £111 each. (no breakfast)
on calling them tonight, they tell me the rooms are going as quick as they normally do and the rates for the dates we need to stay is now £160
i then asked how much it would be for a group booking they said based on the 3 day advace setup £127 but they must be paid pronto or they giove the rooms out at the increasing rate... as some may know i ended up having to pay £200 for one night last year and i did try everywhere for hotel...

sooo... if this is still ok at £127 or £137 with breakfast i can pay this for you all, but i would need payment first, just incase somone pulls out as i cant get a refund on a group booking.

if anyone would like to check prices etc they can using this link:
http://www.birminghamnec.crowneplaza.com

to pay UKSB for hotel accomodation via secure server:
without breakfast:
http://ww6.aitsafe.com/cf/add.cfm?useri ... ice=130.81

with breakfast:
http://ww6.aitsafe.com/cf/add.cfm?useri ... ice=141.11

(please note: there is 3% added for transaction charge)

if you do NOT want to pay now or would rather find other accomodation, or even pay the hotel direct? it is not a problem... but please let me know a.s.a.p. as i will have to cancel the room.
admin@uksignboards.com

Every Room booked has a double queen bed as none other were available. rooms can be smoking or non-smoking but please state in the comment box when paying.

i doubt many will make it here :lol1:

please let me know if you dont want to go folks.. it is certainly no problem for me to cancel a room, but i must do it pronto...
if you want a room. just use the payment link... if you dont, just let me know via admin@uksignboards.com

thanks

Rob,

I'm staying there the best deal 1 month ago was £110 a room incl breakfast........flights are much cheaper than they use to be.......I know it still seems a lot but it's not a bad deal.......no transport...relaxing......work and break all in one......will probably save that amount plus a days missed work from being at the show

thanks peter, not a problem mate... your right actually, booking direct is the easiest method but because prices are going up so fast i thought it better holding 7 rooms just incase someone never got this info ontime. :D

Hi all,
just a quick line to say I'll be there along with my better half, although we won't be
splashing out on the hotel. I've booked us into a B&B that looks after a lot of the exhibitors
about 5 miles or so from the NEC.
So see you all Wednesday.

Have finally booked for the 3 nights as we will be there for the duration of the show, staying at a Travel Inn. Paying £150 odd in total, show is costing far to much money to have the luxury of the Plaza :(
Won't get time for the bar either but will be close to the meeting point so hopefully see some of you then?

Presumably even the ppl not staying over night can meet up in the hotel if they want to, like we did last year?

Is it free into the show ??

Both myself and business partner will be attending the 3 days at the show.

This will be our 1st time over to the sign show as we are only up and running 18 months now.

We also had a nightmare of a time getting booked into a hotel, ended getting booked into the britannia hotel in the center of Birmingham, can anyone tell us if this is near the NEC and also if there is a fee to get into the show?

Dave its about 8-9 miles to the nec from the centre. Admission is free, but quicker if you register first www.signuk.com
Peter I hope you have other things to do 3 days is a lot of time to spend just at the exibition!

thanks for replying simon, in the map they stated it was only 1m from the NEC why is it people never give the right information.

With us only up and running we are hoping to cain alot of new contacts and suppliers from this Simon thats why we choose the 3 days, but im sure if we get bored we will find a nice pub near by, maybe even meet up with the rest of the guys and girls of here to learn soon new things.

Thanks Simon

You should be able to get a train from New Street station (Which is in the city centre) straight to the NEC.

I'm going to miss it to Jill, but I haven't really got an excuse like you as I don't have anywhere near as far to travel, I keep thinking that I should go but not sure if I would manage the traveling.

So we have to add "Dodger of the Sign Show" to your ever growing list of names now then? :lol1:

You'll be missed Carrie, we were all looking forward to meeting you both, but one the bright side I've always fancied a drive over your side of the country.... at least I have an excuse now  :lol1:

I feel a bit pouty today ... the thought of everyone getting together and having a good natter and a laugh and we won't be there!!! will be even worse tomorrow at 2pm :o :( But we are going to try and get there in the evening to the hotel if we can ..... :D Hopefully someone might still be sober when we get there....... but I doubt it??!! :P

Dewi you are more than welcome to come to see us and anyone else who wants to pop over ..... if you could let us know first just to make sure we have enough time to lock up the office and run first  :lol1: Would be best to let us know if you are coming though as we work weird hours between us!! Anyway Im planning on doing some visiting in the summer ..... so be prepared ..... jammie dodgers at the ready please  :lol1:

Sorry guys,

Been, seen and grabbed all the freebies  :o

Had a fantastic day, thanks to all the suppliers for making us very welcome and great to meet some of the group members!

Not too good on the way home - had to take a 2 hour detour because the M6 was closed due to an accident so it took 4.5 hours to get home :-? which made today a very long day - but worth while.

Hi John,

I met up with Lee Harris and also bumped into the guys from Arch-Digital at the LikwidArt stand (or however it's spelled/spelt <must use spell chack>).

I really enjoyed today but the exhibition didn't seem as big as last year! Is this just me or does anybody else think this?

It would have been nice to be there tomorrow to meet up with more folks from the group but the work load wouldn't allow - maybe next year!

I'm hoping that there will be slightly less of an overbearing dominance of printer suppliers this year.

As for freebies, I'm going for plotter blades. I like a challenge. Either that or a free laser engraving machine. What do you think my chances are? :D

Hi big G,

There are quite a few printer suppliers at the show but don't let that worry you, LED, specialist vinyl and framing suppliers etc. are holding their ground.

I didn't manage to find any free blades bit I did get a free laser engraver !!!! It's amazing what gets thrown in when you buy a couple of pieces of engraved wood and perspex

Enjoy the show.

Found the show a little dissappointing this year. Beginnining to think a visit every second year is definately enough to keep up with new products. Did anyone wonder why so many machines were lying idle. Can't really see the point in going to the bother of exhibiting machines with reams of paper just hanging from them

They're waiting for the rest of us to arrive Kevin  :lol1:

I'm not overly fussed what the sign show is all about, there are a few things I want to get more info on, but most of the equipment I've been toying with buying has been pretty much sorted by ppl I know from the boards. I'm more interested in meeting the ppl from here, watching the wrapping demos and being charged extortionate amounts to sit and drink beer :D

Mark, is Lee staying over for another day? I was looking forward to meeting him! :(

The highlight to me will be meeting my all-time number one motoring journalist, the man who can lose a girlfriend at 30 yards but gain a friend in a small dibond salesman.

Ah but you see, I've had me barnet cut so now I look like plain old George Clooney.

I don't have to tell tales about fictional girlfriends either - she's got an IV sedation course to go to, so isn't coming. Probably needs it, living with me!

I'll try my best to look like Keith Flint, honest I will! :D

We all believed you about the girlfriend though mate, sure okay, so nobody actually saw her... okay, so she was busy watching a wrapping demo at the other side of the exhibition hall... and yes, we all accept that she needed to leave early and you were going to catch her up. There was never any question she was there though

I'll tell you what I found difficult last year. Meeting people from here and knowing how to address them. You can hardly go up to a familiar face and say "Hello arsehead_1937XX9" :D

You managed the first bit of that with me though, no problems! :lol1:

Blimey, I still remember that, I'm busy looking over some products and the light suddenly disappeared as I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned, looked up about a metre and there you were! :o Pete recognises you instantly, and I'm stood there with this "WTF are you then?" :lol1: :lol1:

You staying for a beer this year then?

I'll try to stay around a bit longer but no beer unfortunately. I need to keep my licence in order to continue driving around sticking overpriced stickers on shops. Also, the entire population of Northamptonshire decided that they NEEDED signs fitting on Thursday, so I'll be working when I get back.

I only wanted the fictional girlfriend to come so she could drive me home. Bloody NHS and their 'making people qualified to do the job safely' nonsense.

Well I won't deny that with the incorrect mixture of drinks I may or may not spend the night hugging a toilet, but how the devil you'll drive for 5 hours after having 2 hours kip is beyond me! :lol1: Stop round our place on the way mate, I'll make you a brew and steal the hub caps from your car while you enjoy the scenic views :lol1: :lol1:

I got back earlier this evening and my feet are bloody killing me!
Saw a few faces from here; some I've seen before and some new ones. It was good fun to meet up, and especially nice to see Niknak had travelled the 10 million miles down from Haggis land. I see Dewi hasn't posted yet tonight. I expect he's still leaning against the Grafityp stand holding a bottle of beer!

Hi Big G, sorry we didn't get chance to talk at the show but to be honest i wasn't quite 100% sure it was you talking to Dewi.
Just looking at your picture on your last post i can see why i wasn't sure. You are actually a lot taller than i expected & that is because i can now see that you have taken your own picture from arms length with the camera looking down at yourself. (gives the impression that you are only a little southerner) but in reality your are as big as me!
Anyway i do apologies i will make it up to you next time mate OK!

No worries LJ. It's amazing how different some people look when you're used to looking at a 1.5" avatar. I had to read a few name badges to be sure I wasn't talking to a complete stranger. :)

Yep, must've cost Colin a small fortune, we all had a couple of beers! :D

I was amazed how many ppl turned up this year, wish I'd took the camera, there were loads of great photo opportunites! :D I spent most of the day chatting with Big G, John Childs and Mark Walker (who drove me down to the show, a big thank you to him! :D) I don't think I saw much of the show, but there were some interesting new stands this year... I was too busy drinking beer though

Colin had a few I think. In fact, I would go so far as to say he was as p1ssed as a ( PARDON ME ).

I got info on a few suppliers. You can never have too many sources for stuff. So I achieved what I set out for. And I got a guitar.

Isn't Nik ickle? I was expecting her to be about 6 feet tall. As for John (Alpha Sign), let's have an avatar picture from this century, shall we John?

We should all change our Avatars' to animated .gifs with two different images...one we want people to perceive us looking like and the other one the "real" picture. Kind of like the Matrix where your view of yourself is different than in the "real" world. (mine is definately the "real" picture, still doctoring up the modeling pictures)

Mine would stay static Marek, I really am that ugly!

Got to admit though, the vast majority of ppl were recognisable, I knew who they were before they said a word. In Big G's case though, I couldn't help feeling like I was in a Top Gear episode as he raved on about his Mazda and his imaginary girlfriend! :lol1:

I thought Nik was brilliant, but I was shocked that she wasn't taller... mind you, I thought John Childs was shorter! He's a giant!! :o

Cheers, Dewi
