How do I create an invisible background?

I am rubbish at working with jpeg's etc, for all the years I have used Signlab I still cannot get it!

Could someone show me please how to remove the white background from the attached image so I can add a shadow or outline. It is to be printed with a black background. I am using Signlab 9.1 P&C.

Many thanks in hope of help

Lorraine

Re: How do I create an invisible background?

Lorraine you can't remove the background colour from a jpeg image, jpeg's don't support transparencies so you will always have a background colour when you save it, the default is white which is maybe what is happening with your image, you will need to save as a tiff, BMP or some other image format that supports transparencies in order to remove the background.

If you have been sent that image then you should be able to actually change the background colour in what ever software you use not a signlab user myself but it should contain mask tools you can use to mask the white background

Re: How do I create an invisible background?

The image has a "soft shadow" already which means there is no defined edge to each letter as the shadow fades out to white. So not an easy image to crop out the white background. I would go back to the designer and ask if they have a png version with a clear instead of white background that they could send you.

Another possibility Lorraine would be to find out what font they've used.....if possible you could then retype the text, space it correctly etc and make your own mask to sit over the top of the bitmap....the mask could be any colour you want it to be

Don't know about Signlab, but it's easy in Photoshop, just use the magic wand to select the areas you don't want, then fill the selection with black.

Can't seem to attach anything to the reply.....

Re: How do I create an invisible background?

Hello guys, thank you all for taking the time to reply.
We did it eventually, and saved as a PNG, although, as said, the shadow was lost. However, the customer is happy, and I can now print and get the job done, thank you all.
I'll get the hang of this sign making lark when I am retired! :shake:

Hi Lorraine

The only thing I do sometimes is double click on your image as it is a JPEG it the box at the top will change and you can click on the eye symbol and that should remove the white. If it doesn't remove all of the white. I can't remember but there should be a drop down box with an option of clean up white.

Not sure if that's what your looking for or not.

Hi Lorraine,

I stuck it in to vector magic and removed the background and saved as .EPS but I don't seem to be able to attach it for you!
