Ideas for an acrylic sign?

Hi all,

Following on from my other post in the Neon / LED section my customer has decided that the cost for a neon sign is too high for his home mancave (around £1000 for a 1m x 30cm outdoor neon sign).

He wanted me to come up with something different for less money.

In short he has just built a large mancave / outbuilding in his garden, it has a bar, gym, bathroom plus room for swimming pool pump etc. Above the large door he would like the name of his bar(!) to give it a more 'party feel' I have suggested to him perhaps acrylic lettering in a deep cerise pink colour (he has a daughter who loves pink) spaced outwards and mounted onto another piece of acrylic which in turn could screw onto the soffit. He has space on the face of his soffit to have the sign, around 300mm high to play with and approx a metre of so wide ideally.

I'm not in the acrylic / sign type game (more vinyl / digital print) so does anyone have suggestions to what he can do or can point me in the right direction? Please see attached photo, the location of the sign is above the door on the left hand side on the black soffit.

Thanks

That's the sort of thing he wants to achieve I think, although he is happy to light it from the front somehow (overhang a few lights over the top).

What is a fret cut tray?

Re: Ideas for an acrylic sign?

Have you thought about offering him something like the attached.

Its an edge lit acrylic sign....We have made a few of these for the trade and these can be fixed to the wall.

You could even put in a RGB controlled and have the LED's changing to the mood, can be controlled with a remote and would be alot cheaper then £1000 give us a shout see if we can help you out on this one.

Many Thanks

James

Been making these for the trade for a while now! You should see some of the ones we've made for some agencies that represent Russian clients, simply out of this work...3m x 2m panels they use as dividers in rooms with some really cool engraved designs...simply amazing when they light up!

Will see if I can dig up some pictures

The Acrylic panel is fed with LED light along the horizontal edges, the light within the sheet is collected by the engraved 'v' notch and illuminates as the machined finish is matt. You do not in particular need to use 'edge lit' Acrylic to achieve this, any clear standard material will also work, up to >500mm light spread.

Laser etching will also work but applying vinyl's such as frosted will not. The acrylic sheet surface has to be distressed to absorb light and refraction directs the collected light perpendicular to the surface of the sheet.

Re: Ideas for an acrylic sign?

I have a customer who would like to do an illuminated panel along these lines but he wants to do 2 sides of a Projecting sign.
how would you go about this?
I presume he would have to use 2 sheets back to back with light blocking vinyl in between.

Thanks

Stuart, I've never actually tried it but I would have thought you would lose a lot of the effect if it were double sided with a blockout separating the 2 sheets, my other concern would be where it is going & what sort of size, acrylic as you know is quite brittle so a lump sticking out from the wall may easily be damaged. Wouldn't your customer be better off with a standard projecting light box??
