I bought an 8" roller - do I need it?!

Hi everyone,
I'm just setting out and so far have limited myself to shop window work.
I was visiting APA yesterday to collect some vinyl. While the nice lady there organised my order I noticed a wooden handled rubber 8" roller. As soon as I saw it I thought 'that will make v large applications easier...' so bought it. I havn't had chance to try it yet, but just wondered whether anyone ever uses a roller?? It might not have been even intended for vinyl work..... :P
cheers,
John

Welcome John Ashbee.

I too have got an 8" roller, plus a smaller 3" one. Came with the business that we took over. Never used them. Have put them at the back of the workhop.

Regards
Lee

to an extent yes they did. not so much for vans but certainly large panels of vinyl on rigid sided trucks & sheet metal/plastic etc.. there is a knack to it but certainly does work well if applying dry.

Hi all,

must have mention before somewhere about rollers. I use a 3inch roller quite a bit and wouldn't be without it. Great at applying vinyl on hard flat surfaces dry, their not very good wet applying though.

The larger rollers are no good for applying vinyl as they tend to leave air pockets, these are ok for applying the application paper.
The 3'' rollers are handy when applying heavy reflective materials like diamond grade.

Using a roller is similar to a squeege (spreader), get a hard rubber one and apply pressure in over lapping strokes.
Anything over 2 feet though better using a spreader.
Most good art shops should stock them, ( get the red plastic ones if you can ).
