11 02 2011 & 21 02 2012 ?

I woulda said 31 02 2013 too, but i think the myans prediction for the end of the earth will have happened then, will have to wait and se if they're right or not!

i remember 8/8/88 and 9/9/99, similar every year recently too (01/01/01, 02/02 02 etc) we have 10/10/10 this year, 11/11/11 & 22/2/22 not far off!

who knows Harry, your mrs not expecting is she? go check that bathroom cupboard mate!

edit... doh, you beat me too it

And Michael Jackson's favorite town, DuBois. (PA pronunciation)

Say "Hi" to Phil for me.

I saw a sign saying Punxatawney 30 miles, but it was off-route and we hadn't got the time to go. I regret it now.

There's probably bugger all there, but it would have been cool to have a photo standing next to the sign.

Next time. :D

superb news Ian, chuffed for ya!

today did improve.... sat in a car park with my daughter we watch a huge rainbow appear, wierd thing was that there appeared to be no rain, just a little wintery haze in the otherwise blue/grey sky, barely any cloud and we were looking towards the sun, i thought rainbows were formed by light reflecting back from the sun, not through moisture,

anyways, it wasn't the brightest but is certainly the most whole (nye on a complete circle) rainbow i've ever seen from normal ground level... ie not up a mountain! was quite strange but almost uplifting!

Hugh I thought there always has to be moisture/rain/water and sun to get a rainbow

so did I,

I guess the moisture was the 'evening haze' beginning to build up between the few clouds between us and the sun, however, thought you looked away from the sun and the light (rainbow) was visible as it was refracted and reflected back at you, I don't ever recall seeing one while looking towards the sun!

Hugh,
You are correct in as much as sun behind you will create a rainbow, the light is refracted once, reflected back toward you and refracted a second time in each droplet of water, rather like shinning a torch beam into a headlight. Equally if you are looking directly at the sun, some of the light travels straight through each rain drop and depending on the angle between you, the rain drop and the sun will depend on the colour of the light you see. I suppose it would have to be a rather weak and diffuse sun to produce the effect because the light would be less intense. I imagine if for an instant all the angles were correct you would see a complete halo around the sun consisting of all the colours of the spectrum.
Sorry Harry for highjacking your thread.
Steve
