I need help Installing Fonts..

has anyone had a problem when trying to install a new font?? I'll tell you what's happening here:
1. obtain/download a font from the net.
2. go to: start, settings, control panel then open the font's window inside.
3. go file, install new font and then find the location of the font in a directory.

Go to check that the font is there but no, nowhere. This is not only happening on My main computer but also the laptop too!! I've tried, dragging and dropping, copy and pasting but nothing!!

Any ideas??

I'll put this forward as the best best sign display font site on the internet. I've bought a couple and they've been well used. Cheap too. Mac and PC.

Anyone know one to beat it?

Gav,
Your font may be zipped. Find the font, right click on it and see if it's a .zip file. If it is ..... double click it and it should unzip or you may need a program to unzip it.

If you're using Corel, install Bitstream font navigator. I copied all the fonts from the corel cd to a folder on my hard drive (and put the ones I pick up here and there in there too) Then tell font navigator to find all fonts on your drive. (you can tell it what drive or folder to look in if you want to) Now all the fonts are on your computer (but they're not all in the windows folder) Now from navigator you can drag fonts in and out as needed. :)

Thanks for the welcome Robert,

I really enjoy visiting your site and a couple others. There are a lot of great ideas and help when you need it, and maybe the chance to help someone else. It's amazing sometimes to see the different ways of getting the same job done.

One more thought for Gav ...... could it be a Mac font?

Tony,

aka "Wormed1" :)

??

mmm, it's a true-type font that I've downloaded...
definitely unzipped it...
Too many fonts - could be.. Is there anywhere I can ask microsoft if this is the case Mike?? I'll find out how many fonts I've got on tonight when I'm away from school.

What is the best way to delete all the font's and then re-install them??

Also, this bitstream font navigator.. Any chance you could give me step by step instructions on this...?

it's really embarrasing that when someone comes to you with a font on a disk and you can't install it!!!

Gav, if you have to many fonts on the system you will get a message saying " can not install >>>> font, remove some and try again" or words to that effect so I dont think the problem is to many fonts. If the file is unzipped then it should install. I have had a problem in the past where I thought I had downloaded a font and for some reason I haddent. It gave the font name and said it was a tt font but when I looked at the file there was nothing there. It might be worth your while trying to download and install a different font and see if this works, then try downloading the font you want again.

nope

Don't understand it guys...

I've checked using the bitstream font navigator in corel and I have thousands of fonts on my computer that I've never even seen!! I cannot seem to install any of them!! I've only about 800 on my computer that are installed but have about 2.5K on the computer that are NOT installed!!

I'm going to be bald over this!!!

Does anyone know anyone that can help.

Trouble is, it's not just my main computer but it's my laptop too that is the same...

Just wondering if it could be a fault with coreldraw...?

Gav if you are running win98,ME,2000 800 fonts is way too many try deleting a hundred and see how you go, if you're on XP then you should be ok as it will handle about 1000, but then why would you want 800 fonts, I have about 600 but I bet I've only ever used about 20% of them, get rid of some of them, but be carefull, windows relys on some of them for proper operation, there is a feature in this months signcraft on font problems, if you want give me a ring and I'll go through it for you.

Right guys,

You are all totally correct! I made a back up copy of my Fonts directory and then deleted shed loads of fonts from the main folder. After I got below 400 fonts, hey presto I could install anyfont!!

Thanks must go to you all for this!

Managing tt fonts

I use Printers Apprentice to manage ttf's.
Fonts can be installed & un-installed on the fly, as you need them.
Preset text or full set can be viewed at will, even if not installed.
One thing I learnt over the years was to always keep a regular updated backup of the fonts directory, so that when a repeat job comes in which you no longer have the font on your system, you can get it back!
Have a look at PA here: http://www.loseyourmind.com
