Well I no longer work for myself....Sold my soul to the Devil & work as a fitter for SSDM (Boo hisss I hear you say). So I get all my gear from Head office or in the case of the wheels, they were given to me by 3M. I'm sure they are out there..... mmmm Business opportunity?? :cool:

The wheel makes light work of the recesses. Not had an issue with wrinkles or creases. You do have to watch the angle of the wheel, or might track offline. I have 3 wheel sizes, so getting into tight corners isn't too much of a problem. I still use the odd finger/thumb now & again. My heat gun h...

Temp gauges are essential. 3M vinyl for example must be heated to 90 deg in recesses.

3M controltac IJ380 film requires 50 deg while applying & 80 deg post with 120 deg on overlaps....

As Shane says.

I had this same problem 2 months ago.All you need to do is take the blade out of the holder, unsrew the end (so you can see the bearing) then blow out any dust & spray WD40. Job done.


Then it will be cutting like new.

Rob, just spotted your second post.I always work on the flat areas first.As if the vehicle had no recesses. Then once all three sections are in place, just cut, feed into the recesses & patch up. Like you suggested, if you were to go into the recesses while fitting, this would "distort" the image.

Peter, I cut the vinyl down the middle, where it went over the recess.Then folded (fed) into the recess.Then cut the vinyl again in the folds & patched in stripes.So even when you look close its hard to notice joins.Then just went round with the heat gun, just to make sure it was stuck.

Jayne, the sprinter is meant to be cropped. The vito would have been cropped, but the vehicle was a swb.So the height of the logo was determined by its width. The guys that operate the trailers gave it a good clean before i turned up. So just a case of laying it all up (first side) then just cleaning the areas needed with meths.

I was really lucky, apart from a little rain towards the end of the day, there was zero wind.
I only have a kangoo van, so had to do it all using steps!
The key word when fitting is " Control" so plenty of masking tape :cool:

As said before, Digital camera. I aslo do a rubbing of the font/graphics using paper & crayons. That way when you get back to the office you measure the cap height, length & width of letters. You can aslo scan the rubbing into your sign software, then overlay fonts over the top of the rubbin...

My insurance company (Direct Line) did ask for the Colour of my Van & also said that they would not insure the Signwriting/Graphics on it. Also on wraping, i did hear of someone being pulled over and fined for not declaring the change of colour to their vehicle to the DVLA.(This was a FULL wrap).

Yes thats one bit of Vinyl approx 800 x 400mm...total Job was £800, 7 metres of sign Gold & £48per M = £336. Profit = £464, not bad for an Afternoons work :cool:

I used Sign Gold on a Job last week.I was very impressed with it. It has a clear plastic backing, instead of a paper one, which takes a bit of getting used too.
Cherwell sell it for £53 a metre, but i got 7 metres for £48 per Metre.

mmmmm lets see. Custom expressed he didnt want Vinyl, so that rules that out & i would always go the paint route on curtains as vinyl looks naff after a year or so.

Everything on the curtain was cut in Mac Mask.The white & yellow stripe was coach painted with a brush, the text was rollered. I used Apollo Inks and Mactac 9800 series for the cab & rear.

Yeah maybe, thats why i cut the vinyl each side of the rubber, so if it does lift, then it can be removed. Again im only fitting these, no design on my part & im just copying the rest of the fleet. Started with the sides.Aslong as the ribbon hits the top or the bottom, you can "play" with the rear to fit. As for the rubber. Allen, that is just what i needed to know.
I get sent loads of pdf files & at the moment i have to print/scan/trace/edit before i can even think of using it as artwork.I love signlab, but like you said i feel that investing in corel will really help move things along. Thanks

Hi Chris, Never used corel before or seen it in action. Looking for something where i can draw vector graphics from scratch, i find signlab to be a bit basic in this area.

I use signlab and it does most things well. But I find it limiting when it comes to designing new artwork etc.(I spent 4 ruddy hours tonight editing nodes on some dodgy artwork). :x So would corel do the job better/faster, will it give me more options? Well i wanted somthing that would be eye catching and stand out from the norm.
Today i applied the full colour graphics & when i get a few hours spare i will apply the main text.

i run signlab 6 & connect the PC to the plotter via serial port. I also use the spool option, as like you said its faster & allows me to set up the next bit to be cut.
Scanner & printer & signlab doggle are all USB.

I use Signlab 6 Expert.It should have cost £1500 but got it for £650. It also came with the usb doggle, which i prefer to the old serial doggle i used to use at my old place of work.

Yes i agree, layering colours with ink can be tricky.If its text or simple logos then i always use ink. BTW i use "Keeps" & "Apollo" Inks.

I used to use fascal Curtain vinyl, i found i had to alway apply wet.Even when applied wet, it would stick like sh*t to a blanket :-?

When i was employed as a Fitter, i was on £8 an hour + Overtime, at time & a Half + Van.

I did do some private work in that time and would get paid £15-£17 per Hour.

Which is why im now self employed :)

I always tell customers that there is no VAT in the Price as im Not VAT Registered
