Storing print media, advice and views please?

How does everyone store their print media?

Some of these rolls are expensive and bloody heavy especially if it's 1520 or 1600mm so I want to find a convenient way to store them but keeping them protected from dust and any other crap that gets in the air.

Just wondering how you guys do it? Do you leave the bag around them? Do you leave them in boxes? Do you just waste the first metre?

Also do you use gloves when you load the machine?

The reason I ask is sometimes I notice marks in the print and even hand prints where I've handled the media causing a reprint

Re: Storing print media

We have a couple of racks with wheels that hold the rolls upright plus a large shelved rack which holds another 40 or so boxed rolls flat. . Each wheeled one holds 16 rolls but they might as not have wheels as their very difficult to move. Haven't really an issue with dust as we normally lose the 1st part of the roll when loading. Some media would really need glove but I find if you load it from the edge you normally don't print out the far. The material for pop up banners seems the worst for finger marks but again just lose the start of it

We have a rack behind the printer, banner, vinyl, roller banner, t shirt printable, wrap etc. All on a pole, that way your not carrying it far. New material stays in the box until the old is used then it goes in the rack

Gloves are always used when handling material

Same as denise, we ordered some steel box section cut to size and welded it up to make a floor rack that sits behind our printer.

Only media we have dust or contamination issues with is self cling.

Re: Storing print media, advice and views please?

Thanks everyone.

I have 3 racks at the moment, one is under one of my tables and consists of about 100 odd IKEA legs and the coloured 610mm vinyl sits on those. I then have one wall rack made out of wood that holds about 8 1600mm rolls. I then have another wooden trolly with about 20 odd legs and that holds any length media as they're facing upwards.

I'll just stick to what I have then but I'll use gloves in future.

Re: Storing print media, advice and views please?

Hi Everyone, not posted for a while due to holidays and then a big order at the end of Aug. Hope everyone is well? We have an upright holder for 16 solvent rolls (3in core) on wheels. I was toying with the idea of a roll media rack (loads horizontally) but opted for the upright stand due to space constraints. We bought this through SEDO who we purchased the Epson 80600 through too.

I've got a few ideas from some of the posts too so I will definitely try and make these in my print room!

Hi Iain

Yes I did. Basically, they are black Ikea table legs screwed into 18mm mdf.

The legs are about £2.50 each so it does add up but I think it works perfectly. You do get weird looks walking out of Ikea though with all those legs especially when they fall off the trolly right in the doorway stopping everyone getting out, I've never seen so many people wanting to help haha.

All my digital media is covered in bags.
Normal vinyl is not. I wipe with cloth before going onto cutter.

I like the Ikea legs solution.

Re: Storing print media, advice and views please?

I keep the expensive stuff in bags too, I recently saw an online demo where they said to run 500mm through every time before printing.. on reflective wrap at £40pm+ I’m not gonna waste an inch!! Re: Storing print media, advice and views please?

We store everything in bags.
We purchase extra-thick 300mm wide polythene tubing by the roll, which we cut to length and seal the end with a bag sealer.
It is all kept under the worktables:
Digital vinyl is stored horizontally on a rack.
Cutting vinyl can be stacked horizontally on a shelf.
The shelf itself is made from corrugated iron, which stops the vinyl rolling sideways.
The polythene tubing keeps it from being scuffed.
Digital vinyl is handled with gloves.
