Have tried this a couple of times on various different colours with both Matt laminate or frosted vinyl, it’s never really worked to be honest!
Best thing to do is to cut a sample piece and try it on the vehicle to see how it works with that paint finish

I've done a lot of this on a fleet of vans, on the first few I used matt laminate which looked OK but you could see any mark underneath the laminate so I then went on to use a matt vinyl in the same colour as the van wich gave a better result

I have used blue etch on a mid blue vehicle before and looked good, gave it a nice effect

I have put quite a bit of vinyl that isn't really suitable for vehicle graphics on vans over the years, always tell the customer that what they want is a display film for interior work so I can't offer any warranty on it, customer has always been happy with this & to be honest I have only had one guy come back but not to complain, just to get me to do it again as after 18 months or so it was starting to look tatty

Peter's way of doing it works very well, gloss vinyl's don't seem to work very well (probably due to lighting) but matt vinyls seem to work very well. The good thing about doing it that way is you should be able to find a matt vinyl suitable for vehicle livery so no issue with any warranty
Get a sample of a matt as close to the vehicle colour as you can to show the customer

Need heat it in and out of groves there for calendar vinyl wouldn't work...client seen samples of colours similar to the paint finish but doesnt like any...to put it simply only frost or similar looking laminate would do it for him...designer is to be blamed as he put an image of similar van with that sort of effect on the inspiration board or whatever they call it without realising it was a photoshop job...
