Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

Suggestions on wrapping material to wrap my personal VW Sharan.

What i want from this wrap:

- to be nice and to grab attention
- to be able to show my potential clients my attention to details
- only break the bank if absolutely necessary. (Super expensive vinyls etc)

Mirror gold wrapped VW Sharan? A bit kich? Or?

Looking forward to hear from you.

Cheers

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

I'd request colour charts from all the manufacturers and go from there.

Thanks Denise. My dilemma: solid wrap or digitally printed design?

combine both, or do a complete split, 50/50 digital blending out to solid colour change.

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

The problem with solid colour wraps is that most people don't realise it's wrapped unless you tell them. My Capri is wrapped and most people (even other Capri Club members) think it's painted. I've even been told their father/uncle/granny/babysitter used to have one the same colour as mine. If you want to advertise your wrapping abilities/business then go for a printed wrap or an outrageous colour.

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

Unless it's chrome or gold, I think most folk will think it's paint, as Phil says.

A digital print will show off the wrapping and the design, 2 birds with one stone.

ImageImage

I've just had mine done this week and it really is a dilemma what to choose when there is so much choice but oh my days I've had people stood pointing at it and people taking photos of it. I took it to a customer's on Friday and it was a great advert.
If I'd just gone off the swatch I'd never have chosen it so a google search def helped.

No one looks twice at a standard gloss so if it's your advert then yes it needs to be LOUD!!!!

Thanks Phil......I really wasn't sure at first but then every time I popped my head in the wrap room to see how it was going I got more excited......It's one of Avery's colour flow series aptly named for the season "Fresh Spring"

I think there's is a Chameleon option but apparently our lease company requests 4 photographs taken from different angles. I've asked Steve (who sorts that side of things for us) to let me know of details so we can keep customer's up to date with the paperwork expectations

If things haven't changed then a wrap is classed as a temporary change & doesn't affect your V5 documentation. You do however have to inform your insurance company who will add it as a modification, my insurance Company charges extra in stages depending on the value of the wrap. Haven't ever been asked for pictures though even when I was driving a car with colour shift vinyl. KPMF have done one for years, surprised it has taken the other major manufacturers so long to bring something out.

Last time I spoke with DVLA about this was just under 3 years ago when I wrapped the Ford Galaxy so things may have changed as far as V5 goes but I haven't ever been stopped for driving the wrong colour car (yet)

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

We advise that you tell your customers to inform both their insurance and DVLA. There still doesn't appear to be any full rules but this is something your customers must investigate for themselves before committing to the wrap.
On my last wrapped car we had the V5 changed.

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

The DVLA have recently revised their view that a wrap is only a temporary colour change. The advise now is to inform the DVLA when a vehicle is wrapped

Recent Statement by the DVLA:-

"The register maintained by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) essentially exists to assist in revenue collection, road safety and law enforcement. The Police and other enforcement agencies rely on the DVLA record for all vehicles-related investigations. It is therefore paramount that the information stored on the vehicle register is accurate and up to date.

DVLA records details given by vehicle manufacturers at first registration. Any changes to the vehicles details must be notified to DVLA by law.

By covering the entire vehicle in a coloured adhesive/vinyl wrap, it is DVLA’s view that the colour change should be recorded. To notify a change of colour you should complete section 7 of the registration certificate V5C and return it to DVLA Swansea SA99 1BA. You should receive a replacement certificate within two to four weeks.

We would advise that any owner of a vehicle that has had a full colour change wrap should now inform the DVLA immediately by completing and sending the necessary paperwork as specified.

Thursday, 3rd April 2014"

Note that they say it is the DVLA's view - so still open to interpretation. You can still argue it is a temporary change - the actual colour of the vehicle still exists under the wrap

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

Looking at that date they must have been just about ready to publish that when I last spoke to them so not sure why they didn't tell me that at the time

Mind you they had been talking about making changes for quite a few years before that which is one of the reasons I always checked with them BEFORE wrapping one of my cars.

I notice they say adhesive vinyl, wonder if their view of plasti dip has changed as well

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

What's strange for me is our first printed wrap was LESS effective than our Matt metallic green wrap I have now. More people stop to ask me about the colour than they did the print but it's probably down to design and also no need to ask if wrapped as they should be able to tell. I think it's better if they talk to you about it

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

Not sure people will know that is a wrap Warren, guessing that a lot of people will assume it is painted. It is however an unusual colour & something that you won't see if you look at factory colours which is maybe what makes them ask

Thank for the feedback Warren. Means a lot, especially because you had both kinds of wraps. Good day!

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

Full wraps are great, but as Phil says, sometimes people won't know it's wrapped. Full colour print is great too, but again the design will determine how well it works.

We just went with a simple 1/2 wrap on the Caddy (with the exception of embossing loads of text on it), then when we added the Transit went along the same lines, without the vinyl under the wrap.

That looks good David - and the fact it's half and half highlights the fact it's a wrap

Love that David, I've toyed with an idea similar but could never decide on a design

Here is one of our fleet, the others are all rusted wraps, but people just think they are hunks of junk!!

So on this we tried to make it painfully clear that she is wrapped :)

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

Cheers for the feedback.

If you're doing full wraps, it's the way to go. However, we prefer to do partial wraps, & commercial work, so that's what we did with out vans. The Caddy has cut vinyl under the wrap, but TBH, we've never once been asked to do it to a customers van, and unless your stood next to it, it's not really noticeable. We actually re-branded when the transit arrived, as you can see in the image below, our original logo on the unit sign just wouldn't have worked in the same way.

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

I wrapped my girlfriends car with a HEXIS vinyl. HEXIS called the colour 'Variochrome Pearl/Pink, but other companies I have had samples from called it Iridescent.

Car 3.jpg

The car was originally white and because there was no significant change in the base colour, the vehicle documents didn't have to be updated.

But as has been mentioned, because it was the same colour all over, people thought it was a paint job and didn't realise it was wrapped. Whereas I have only wrapped the bonnet on my van (so far) and have had quite a few enquiries.

I'm hopefully moving into a unit in the next month or so, so I will do the whole van then. But I am still going to have the bonnet and rear doors in a different style to the sides so that people can see that it is not painted.

Re: Wrapping vinyl material suggestions please?

Thank you all for your input.

I think I will be going 50 / 50 wrap.

I think this wrap thick all boxes.

Nice presentation when potential client comes and likes to view the finish of the wrap. (colour change blend to digital print)
