Graphic design outsource help

Hi guys,

I'm struggling a little with my graphic design skills, my designs seem to be basic when compared to some others, just wondering if anyone can either help me with a course or training, or help with outsourcing some of the designing?

Re: Graphic design outsource help

I dont believe this is something you can pickup overnight.
I would imagine there will be online courses from the likes of linda.com and the like.

are you good at drawing freehand? only asking as many have a good understanding and ability to draw but their real limitation is the software they use.
then there is the opposite, I let go of a graphic designer just recently. he was very good at using design software and could copy things pretty good, but completely hopeless at designing from scratch.

have a look at the following news story we featured on uksignboards.com recently. watch this video and many like them all freely available to you online. try get your head into this sort of thought process. its not going to come to you overnight but will make things easier as you progress.

Subbing design work is an option, but can get expensive or leave you wide open too a fall if you have no real experience in this type of thing.

Buy yourself a copy of Mike Stevens book "Mastering Layout" it will start you on the way to better designs, it is an old(er) book but the info it contains is still as relevant as when it was published.

Re: Graphic design outsource help

I'm in the same boat, but for now as I've got so busy I outsource mine, found a girl who's about 50 miles away, jst graduated from university, but still doing non design related jobs , so I take the brief and pass it onto her, I'm basicly the middle man and add a few ££ on, then I get the vehicle graphics and embroidery and printing work ,

Design is something I want to be good at but I'm not in all honesty, so better to pass it on and stick to what your good at, but I still buy books and try and learn and will continue to do so

Sounds a bit sad I know but when you are out & about look about & see what others have done, analyse them to see if you think they work, think about what you could have done to make them better etc etc

That's not sad at all - we all do it, I'm forever running my hands across a sign to see if it's cut vinyl or printed.

Re: Graphic design outsource help

Hahahah! @Phill I got told of by security a few months back because I stood in an entrance of super market looking at some direct printed boards and was touching them and then moving my head from side to side to see if I could see the direction of the banding!! Very sad but just can't help it!

Have you tried somewhere like freelancer or one of these other design websites that let you post projects and loads of designers offer there solutions and you pick the best one.

I do believe Unique Art services do 'design' but not 100% sure to what extent, logo design for sure but drop them an e-mail and marvel at wonders of technology dealing with sone one around the globe in India, easier than some local suppliers I can walk to!

Re: Graphic design outsource help

Thanks for the tips, I'm self taught so far, and sounds like I'm the same as the guy you let go Robert, I pride myself on the ability to replicate artwork so close to the original it's hard to tell them apart, however foresight is something I lack. It infuriates me as I try so hard to create designs and wraps to be competitive yet mine look pretty basic when up against some others.
I will watch the video and look into some books too though

Re: Graphic design outsource help

It helps to sketch on paper when designing something rather than going straight to the computer there is something about a pencil and a blank canvas that gets the creative juices flowing. Also we tend to discount an idea before we put it on paper don't sketch everything that comes to mind and then choose the best idea to expand on or maybe even merge two / three ideas together.

Re: Graphic design outsource help

As a designer myself I find that going straight to the computer limits me creatively because as soon as you hit an idea you follow it only to find out it's not gonna work then your frustrated and start all over again but when you're on paper you just keep sketching idea after idea
