Night & Day sign. can you guess how its done?

Heres an experimental sign I did a few years ago.

The idea was to produce a sign that looked different at night than it did during the day.

Heres the daylight version

At night the sign changes - as the sky turns dark new images begin to appear - i.e stars, the moon and even a UFO -

Hopefully these photographs convey the general idea.

I'll buy a pint for the first person to explain how this was done

have you applied, say a light grey vinyl on the inside of the light box with the stars etc cut from it.
during the day you cant see anything as its inside & the outside is white/opal perspex. and its not illuminated.
but at night when its illuminated the stars and the rest seem much brighter as they have been weeded away but the remaining vinyl still lets an eliment of light through but keeps it darker at the same time...

Hi Phill
I know rob, The smarty pants solved the puzzle you set.
What I would like to know is how did you come up with this idea.
I think it’s very clever. Well done Phill.

Thank you Sally

I had a customer looking for sign that was a bit different (aren't they all).
I'd seen a picture of an advertising sign in a magazine that changed the words when lit and unlit. I guessed this had been done using masks to block out the light and thought it would be interesting to try and do something like it myself. :D
