'World Cup Sweep Stake Results'

Come on who's excited!!

I love it, the best tournament on earth.

I know not many on here like football...

So to me, Glenn, Georgio, and all other football fans and especially Harry who on this occasion 'only' I will let support England as his team were robbed of a place

:cheer: :cheer: ''COME ON ENGLAND'' :cheer: :cheer:

Semi finals at least, I can feel it in my water.

Who fancies a sweep stake (?)

I too am looking forward to it. Would be nice to see some more home nations competing too.

Hope you are right about the semis at least.

I'm up for a sweepstake too.

Come on England!!!

He's a Celt ....... think he'll support England?

No idea who's going to win. But I reckon England will be out in the quarter finals. Argentina might be good for a bet tho. :)

So used to Scotland not being there that it makes no difference LOL, but I still get wrapped up in it regardless even tho I'm not much of a footie fan. It's a brilliant event!

Well done Gary and Marcella

Couldn't agree more about home nations, would love to see Scotland, Wales and Ireland in it, may be just maybe one time they will all qualify... :-? but a couple would be nice

I'll sort a sweep stake out...anyone else

You leave Harry to me, the St Georges Flag I posted to him should be there tomorrow, it's just big enough to fit his bedroom window :D

Totally different atmosphere, working with footy fans with the radio on. Kinda gets a buzz going!

Not a huge fan but if it increases production, it works for me!!!

I have to be truthful here, i prefer to see guys holding odd shaped balls instead of kicking them :-?

i might get caught up in the odd game if i'm down the pub but, you won't be trampled by me trying to get to the nearest tv or radio!

Well I'll be cheering for the USA on Saturday.
As I'm Welsh it's law that we support whoever is against England..... :D

Sorry guys not much I can do about it :(

To be honest though I prefer Rugby, much more exciting to watch.

I'll catch some games I guess but won't lose any sleep if I don't see many.

Hi Neil.

Year but last we bought a house in Bren Rhonda. No chain from either party. We even had all our belonging in storage ready for the move, son enrolled in school. 2 weeks before the move seller pulled out. Reason being peer pressure from the other villagers to not sell to an English couple.

It made our life hell for 6+ months.

Sort of puts your comment into context!

Saying that, Rugby all the way for me too!

England mostly. Over hyped. And it's a sad state of affairs when the best we can muster is Heskey up front & calamity James in goal.

Domestic football is a different matter. Roll on August.

Yeh, that's going a little overboard.

I'm only talking sport..............just friendly rivalry.

I've got my ABE t-shirt on...............anyone but England
:D

I was at the Wales - South Africa rugby international on Saturday and had some great banter with a few South Africans in front of us just as we do when we sit next to English, Irish, Scottish, French or Italian supporters at the 6 Nations.

Go USA........

Valid point Brian, We like seeing how many times Hesky falls over, he's always down :D but does work well with Rooney.

Georgio..I haven't forgot the £1 :D I will PM you.

Neil..... :( what can I say, all this ABE stuff going on. I would love to see Wales in it and would be rooting for them as much as England as I would if Scotland were in.

I'm going to make sure you get the 'Ivory Coast' in the sweep stake for that :D

i am not a football fan at all... just cant be bothered with it.

The only time Ive ever got caught up in a match was years ago with my mates, when we were in Spain. England were doing well in the world cup final rounds... combined with plenty beer and the brilliant atmosphere it was a great night. even though they got beat. :D

Personal view on the world cup, ide prefer England, Scotland, Ireland or Wales to do it over anyone, im not fussed... :D

I was there with the kids too (didn't see you though!), I think the aussies and the boks have by far the best supporters for the banter and atmosphere, even the French have a good sense of humour around a rugby pitch!

my boka mate was at the other end of the stadium and phoned me up to tell me they'd just scored against us before blowing his hooter down the phone  superb pre, during and post match atmosphere in Cardiff, nowhere else has it!

sorry guys... football.... carry on!

I will Hugh...and your team is looking about as good as Neil's :D

It's not only about the Football it's the whole event, watching games in pubs, having people round with a few beers and the feel good factor, you certainly don't need to be football fan to enjoy it.

I'm off the Alton Towers till Sunday...yeah I know bad timing by the Mrs.
So will sort the sweep stake out Sunday Evening,

Any suppliers want to put a small prize up for grabs.....

Sorry back to Rugby

I think you will find they may be on "their" way home. And you are pleading for them to "lose".

I think (and don't care) both will go through. And both lose when they play a half decent team. England most likely on pens. :lol1:

Do you wanna go another tenner?

Bring back Alf Ramsay I say. What does Fabio Cappello know. (Most likely he is a Mole for Italy making sure England perfom badly.)
Sure he pretends he wants the team to win, but secretly he is making sure that England do poorly so that Italy have a greater chance of winning.

If the English national football team were actually managed by an "Englander " I reckon they would have a greater chance of winning :-?

Ok so I finally watched (soccer? football?) for the first time I think.
I think I watched Rugby once in the winter and it was just a jumble of guys in a heap.
Anyway, I was watching it with my 85 year old friend and he likened the sound of those stupid horns to the shrieks of ladies seeing Frank Sinatra in concert.
We also didn't understand the whole "tie" concept. What? No overtime?
The most interesting thing to me was the adverts on the walls changing every so often. Bet that was expensive.

just the pools at the Mo Jill, ties are irrelevant at the mo as the four teams (four?) all play each other and the top two (i think) from each pool goes through to the next round, points are awarded for wins and a tie, nothing for a loss, if there's a tie with points it will go down to most goals scored, conceeded etc, known as the goal difference.

once in the knock out rounds, quarters, semi's etc, in the event of a tie they will play another 30mins -two 15min halves, not sure if it's a full 30 mins or 'golden goal' (do they still do that?) where the first to score is the winner. if at the end of the 30mins it's still draw (tie) then it will go to penalty shoot outs, we always do really well in these, especially against the Geermans!

my knowledge of football (soccer is an american term cos they stole the name 'football' for their armoured rugby - no offence!) is about 10yrs or more out of date so, i'm possibly wrong on the finer points!

Just a bit of grease on his gloves, he's cleaned it off now ready for Fridays match, It's impossible for England to win the World Cup without any West Ham players, so he is staying putt :D

Still on course to go all the way :-?

Germany looking good even though against Aussie.

And this thread has been more interesting to me than the actual game.

Just catching up and had a chance to read (skim read) through this. I was wondering why the flags were changed and now I know and have updated mine not that I actually watch or follow "Soccer" at all.

Obviously being South African I do wonder exactly what this meant :-?

Warren.
I have heard the horns are a traditional form of celebration in sa, that's fine, just dont know why the crowd (audience)need to blow the bl00dy things all the time. It is actually getting on a lot of peoples nerves, Like I said, I am not a footie fan, but would have watched a bit more if not for the racket

TBH I don't mind the horns, don't really notice them once the game gets going, certainly no more annoying than the England brass band playing the 'great escape' tune or the damm annoying Pompey cow bell.

If the horn is part of the African sports scene, then we should have the good grace to put up with it / enjoy it.

Regarding the horns, certainly didn't seem as bad tonight or am I getting used to them.

Its about 20 miles or so from me and I did some signwriting there many moons ago.

It is called Castell Coch and is a late nineteenth-century 'fairytale'-style castle, a folly, built on medieval remains, designed for the third marquess of Bute by William Burges. It is unbelievably decorated and furnished in a Victorian Gothic style with amazing paintwork to the walls and ceilings, it really has to be seen to be appreciated.

It's open to the public and if your ever down this way again well worth a visit.

Sorry, there endeth the history lesson. :D

Marcella - don't think any footy fans bar French ones like France, far too arrogant at times, which is exactly why other footy fans don't like England as we are guilty of same inflated egos :)

As for the Rugby, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Wales take on the All Blacks tomorrow in the first Test over in New Zealand, you can
rest assured it'll be a lot more exciting than England's dire performance tonight.

I think I've figured out what's wrong..

..the England players keep passing the ball to each other - this goes on and on and nothing seems to happen at all. What they need to do is kick the ball at the oppositions goal. (They tried this a few times but missed or the goalie saved it). Maybe if they tried it a bit more often they would score a goal.

I'm sure Fabio Cappello realises this and has told the team.. but seeing as he can't speak English and most of the England team can't speak Italian perhaps the message isn't getting through :-?

Plenty inflated egos all round in the sport Ben! But some larger than others  I think the high expectations England have is often their downfall and it's not helped by all the media hype.

Yes but come on Wales aren't really a 'footie' nation, it's not the national game here.

Surely they should be playing better football than this :-?

Shocking performance from England :shake:

It was embarrassing,, It was like they were playing together for the first time.
Capello should have changed the system after the first 20 minutes when it just wasn't working.

But ultimately no spirit in the team just 10 confused looking players, with James having a pretty good game.

It's going to be a hard game to watch on Wednesday :-?

Good on the USA..and they were robbed at the end.
Shocker for Germany :o

Been watching most of the ITV coverage just for half time to listen to Patrick Vieira   and he's sooooo easy on the eye. Best bit about the world cup so far! :D

What about poor 'Kaka' being sent off for Brazil.......absolutely shamefull, the IC player should be sent home and made an example of.

I wouldn't mind but the ref didn't even see it :o

Brazil, looking good..not the usual flamboyant team we a re used to seeing, but will be hard to beat.....their second goal was dubious though

yeah, that was the worst red card ever, the ref was looking away from them. I felt sorry for him.
Apparently yellow cards can't be appealed and his is will stand as will the one game ban. :( But the IC player should get a ban for his conduct when they have a look back at the incident.

I think these days FIFA are very reluctant to punish players retrospectively unless the ref makes mention of an incident in his report. In a big tournament like the WC they are not going to start publicly undermining the officials so no chance of punishment for IC player, nor turnover of ban for Kaka.

Besides this is why you take your 23 best players, if one is injured/banned then another takes the place. Harsh rules but that's football for you!

Looks like I am going to lose my tenner on England reaching the final :(

Don't give up hope just yet Ben, Many teams that have reached the semi's and the final have played very poorly during group stages just scraping through.... A descent win on Wednesday will make all the difference.

Rivaldo was fined for this in 2002, but not banned http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RKo_50sWW4

I guess what goes around comes around :-?

Rivaldo deserved to be banned for that, absolutely disgusting simulation.

There is still hope but after all the media stories over the past few days I can't see much hope, especially with Carragher now suspended. Leaves us with Dawson who has no international experience and Upson who played for a team that almost got relegated. Doesn't fill me with confidence.

However I will be cheering them on regardless, lets hope the best player performs (Gerrard, not Rooney!! ) :)

Here's a little joke to lighten the tension at the mo.......

I asked Fabio Capello if he thought England would go 4-4-2 today. He said "No, I think they will go 7-4-7, it's bigger and offers more leg room." :D

I'm not drunk, but, I think England have to win today to lift the country in the wake of the emergency Budget we had yesterday. No pressure then :-?

What really p1sses me off is that France wasted a place, Ireland what have given it a real shot at things and would have been far more entertaining to watch....

Also couldn't believe Henry came on for about 20 minutes and still managed to hand ball again :-?

I was in Paris when the French went out on Tuesday . ... :o Even yesterday when the Algerians went out the city was unhappy as there is a huge French/Algerian community there. Home today
:(

Knew the English would get through, I did say you would, but now you'll HAVE to play good or your out on your ear!

Delighted USA went through they so deserved it.

As for Italy ..... oh dear! The last 10 minutes of the match was tremendous, if the Italians had played like that from the start they wouldn't be on the plane home!

4 -1, 20 minutes to go and you've got to admit Germany are class compared to England.

I feel sorry for all the English fans who traveled out to SA, maybe the England players should club together and reimburse the fans.

A shocking performance in the whole comp so far, how on earth they thought they'd win the World Cup is beyond me.

If I were English I'd feel so aggrieved against those overpaid bunch of prima donnas.

Bye, Bye Fabio.............. :D

Think your right...Embarrassing as usual....

Robbed of a goal tho...

Out of 64 million+ people in England surely we should be able to find 11 players who want, and who can, play football and earn £75k per week to kick a ball.

I don't think he'll loose sleep over that Marcella..I can see him smiling from here.

All in all we were CRAP..defending a complete and utter shambbles, good on the German's they should have won by more.

HOWEVER..if this isn't a case for goal line technology I don't know what is, a multi-multi million pound sport with decisions like that..incredible. Not that I think it would have made any difference :(

Without a doubt England did equalise before half time. A poor decision by the referee not to allow the goal and why weren't the linesmen consulted?

Germany always claimed that if they had not been awarded the goal against them in the 1966 final (which clearly did not cross the line then) they too would have had a different match.

Also - England played in Red and Germany in white in both games - spooky or what :o

Neil, do you think you might need counseling to try and recover from England going out, don't do anything silly now, it's only a game :D

Worst bit of this is having to remove the 2mtr sticker off the back of my van tomorrow :(

Phill, could have been a different outcome if it had been awarded, to go in half time 2-2 would have lifted England....and with Lampard hitting the cross bar with his next free kick....BUT I feel we still would have lost, we were simply out classed,we were just unbelievably poor at the back

Aye Phill and Matty, I told you not to mention the recesses
It was a tough decision, do it properly and risk stripping it in a coupler of weeks....or doing it in cheap vinyl, knowing it would pop out quickly...I decided on the latter and now we are out glad I'm glad I did :)

I guess you take the risk of potential customers seeing it poping out of recesses, but I won't loose sleep over it.

Shocking that two teams have gone out of the World Cup wondering what might have been. Particularily the Mexicans who were in the game up until the goal. You could physically see the wind had been taken out of their sails. Tragic that one man's stubborn refusal to see the benefits of technology has turned the game into a sham. I think England may have been a different team had they got back to 2-2, tragedy is, we'll never know.
Haven't seen a cup winning team yet, I'm fancying the Dutch as dark horses.

To be fair, I don't think they deserved to be there after the first 2 performances.

That said I do think that had the goal been allowed we had the Germans rattled and the game could have gone in a very different direction.

Very disappointing!!

Did you hear Chris Waddle on The Chris Evans show this morning, he played clips of his commentating and slamming the F.A. after it all went pear shaped.

I say put Harry Redknapp as manager and give him a free reign to do what ever he wants without disruption from the suits behind the scenes.
