New Server

Why are we changing servers?
We are changing servers for several reasons.
The main reason is the server we have at the moment cannot cope with the continually increasing traffic/bandwidth to the site.
We will be moving to a much bigger and faster server, which we hope, will make browsing the uksignboards.com far more enjoyable for everyone.
We will be upgrading many areas of the site allowing the uploading of files to our servers coupled with the introduction of new forums and facilities.
We are sure you will enjoy what we plan to offer over the coming weeks.

Progress on server move
Well just after 12 midnight we successfully moved the database to another server.
(not the new one) Site was only down about 15mins while the switch was made.

Another test will be done on Sunday evening, which should take 5-10 mins then one again on Monday evening.

Tuesday evening we will announce the last step.

Like I have said before, we hope only sluggish page changes will be noticeable.
If you spot anything unusual please contact us and advise.

I've popped in and out of a few forums and quite a few posts. No sluggish pages as of yet. The only possible side effect I've noticed is the emails that inform of PMs are coming about 5-10 after the PM was sent. Not sure whether it was like that before or??

Cool to here the server is on the move. Nightly 15-30 minute switch is brilliant, next to no downtime :D

Cheers, Dewi

golly gee batman this has caused a real ladder in my tights

listen up folks.. if you dont have my email or uksigngroup@hotmail.com
then please take note now if you will see yourself using the site over the weekend.
i think everything should go fine, but! as you know the site can go down for 48hrs. to prevent this we have come up with a juggling act of 3 servers. this should prevent anyone evening noticing the change over.
if it does end up going down regardless we cannot act for 48hrs as this is standard time for a domain to reregister. once we know there is bother, all we can do is change it back which will take upto 48hrs more! so the site could go for 4 days :o dumb dumb dumb!!!!
gee batman, those folks have caught me with my american tan tights down

lets see what happens ehh.. i am a bit of a dare devil   not!

Hi Rob

Site seems little changed to me, but I am still on a lowly dial-up connection - one daywe may get Broadband availability.

BTW - I notice Dewi has just clocked up his 500th post! Guess you need the extra bandwidth.
(hot)

Great job Rob - as ever

Cheers

to my knowledge it will kick in sooner for some than it will others.
if all goes well by sunday evening then we still have a database to move. this will only take 10-15 mins on monday or tuesday night late on. so hopefuly things will start to improve speed wise etc after that.
thats the idea anyway.. its all a bit of a juggle like i said. the reason for it is to prevent the normal down time of upto 48hrs of the website while the domain dna is changed from one host to another. not so much the site or database.

fingers crossed

if all goes well, i can get on with getting this site in full swing. :P

ok folks.. first signs that the new domain DNA has started to kick in is missing images.
i have now checked uksignboards.com on my computer and the old image/logo is appearing as the header on the home page. my avatar and some others are showing red crosses. this is just side effects and we expected them. so not a problem. it just means that the change over is going smooth because we arent seeing any downtime.
once the DNA has completed 100% by tommorrow night. we can reloacte the database which should bring all those missing images back automaticaly.
starting to feel better about all this now.. yippee! (hot)

Robert shouldn't have made this place so addictive, I can't keep away from the place! :o There is a bright side, with all this extra bandwidth and hard drive storage space, we can all have a field day posting images of everything and anything now! Bagsey posting loads of piccies of SignUK and Steve B. covering Robertin gold leaf for all the heckling!!

Don't know whether anyone else is experiencing this, but alot of the images have disappeared on the boards. My avatar seems to be displayed and a few others, but Nik's has gone, Jill's and a few others. Plus the majority of the forum banners seem to have gone for a burton :-?

Could be teething problems with the new server, but I thought I'd post to get a general consensus, make sure it isn't something I've done wrong at my side :D

The images and things should be 99.9% sorted now, I'll have another check Monday/Tuesday when I move the DB, but it's looking good so far!

yep things are slowly coming back to normal.
monday-tuesday we can move the database onto the new server also. that should get any sloppy page changes sorted out.
the good thing about this is the site did not go down!
as i have said. normaly this type of domain/server transfer would have pulled the site down for upto 48hrs :-?
i would imagine it will take me till sunday to go through alll the old pages and demos etc making sure i dont have broken links with images.
if you find any please let me know.

over the next week i will be working on some cosmetic areas of the site as well as work being done to streamline the site a bit better.

if anyone has any probs or suggestions to what we could add or what would help you navigate the site better now is the time to say.

dum dum dummm... :o

As i am sure you have noticed the site is running painfully slow.. Why?
Well the last move.. "The database" is giving us bother.
It’s a straight forward procedure but someone at the hosting company has given us some corrupt files and its not working, as it should.
Not to worry i will call tomorrow and have them sorted it at their end. Just sets me back a bit for the completion of everything. :(

We will do our best tomorrow evening and get this sorted..
I do apologise for any inconvenience caused

hi folks.. ok need a little feedback.. the new database is now inplace and all we have to do now is make sure everything is linking and that the speed is upto scratch.

could you please report any faults that you find.
i.e. broken links, images not showing, avatar uploads not working, file swapping not working properly..
anything at all...

i have broadband and things are wissing for me here so im pleased at that. but what about others on 56k connections and the like. how is it for you?

any feedback i would really appreciate, as we hope to tie up any loose ends from the server switch tonight

thanks for the feedback nik, im really glad. we actualy have some tweaks still to do to get it all upto 100% performance so im very happy that you are getting along fine with a 56k connection. makes it feel all worth while.

the best thing about the new serversis that they boast 1 on the highest uprate connections and we have tons of bandwidth and webspace now. so it lets me develop the site exactly how i plan to..

Sleep Tight, Robbie.
Everything seems to be much better on my end of the cable
than it was yesterday! Still a wee bit slower that before,
but not too shabby.
Och! Lad, I don't know where ya been, but I see ya won first prize!
(dunno where that came from!)
Sweet dreams.
