URGENT 4hrs

Hi Guys
I've just been phoned up by a web domain registering site because someone is after my name for their site.

My name 'Alpha Signwriting' has not been registered.

The company after my name have a different name and are aware of my existence.

I have up until 5.00pm to contest against this and it seems that the only way to do this is by claiming the domain name myself.

I am a little suspicious of the call as well. Are they just trying to scare me into making a decision I haven't yet thought about?

Do I stand to lose a lot if I allow these guys to take my name?

Any thoughts - Please make um quick....Ta!

John

John,

Trouble with domain names is that you can buy alphasignwriting.com and then alphasignwriting.co.uk, .net.biz.org. this that and the other.

Then you can buy alpha-signwriting with the same connotations with the hyphen etc., etc., The list is endless.

If your trading name is used by a start up company then I am told you do have some comebeck in the eyes of the law.

John it's a load of rubbish.

If your interested in buying a domain name visit www.uk2.net

I think they are a fair price check it our first and then see if the people that rang you up are a way over the top.

don't loose any sleep though

I've read about this John - It's a scam so don't fall for it. They're only trying to get you to register the name with them at an inflated price. Register it yourself as Rob has already said if you're worried. It'll only cost you 9 pounds so it's probably worth doing regardless.

John

The phonne call you have had is a SCAM. Do not trust this ultimatum (?)

How can they check every applicant of a domain name against a possible name of an existing company who might want their unregistered name registered? There is no way this would happen!

They are just trying to rip you off! We have had similar calls for our name.

As everyone has said, register it yourself at one of the many on-line web domain registers.

Cheers

I'll echo everone elses sentiments, they are just trying it on.

We had a similar situation the other day, we registered the domain while the guy was trying to sell us it. After letting him babble on for about 10 mins the domain name was ours. He was most disapointed

If I were you I would register it right away, we use http://www.ukreg.com/

When I did a search on uk2.net (thanks Lorraine and Rob) to see if anybody else had taken my name, someone had!

When I checked the address it was mine!!

I'm with Yell.com!!!

I going to find a corner to stand in

John - you did the right thing in asking about it on here...everyone else - brill job, looking after our own I call it!

Gotta tell ya' - I had one of these calls recently (but I'd heard of the scam), ir went summut like this:

call centre: "hello Mr Brown"

me: "can I help?"

call centre: "We felt it only fair to call you - I have someone on the other line wanting to buy your domain name, that's due for renewal soon, and thought you might like first refusal"

me: "what name is that then"

call centre: "mikebrownsigns.com"

me: "no - that's fine, go ahead - let them have it"

call centre(sounding surprised): "really!!! - are you sure?"

me: "yeah - I don't mind"

call centre: "are you really sure you don't mind losing the domain and all that entails?"

me: "nope - I don't mind - even if what you're telling me were really happening and not all in your mind, I wouldn't mind?"

call centre: "what do you mean 'in my mind'?"

me: "nice try you pratt, now [go forth and multiply]".....click... I put down the receiver.

I wish some of these people would find some level of self respect and get a real job!

more soon

I too, have had one of these calls.

Told the chap to "go forth"

I`ve just been on a site where you can see what donaimes are available.

I`ve just found out that the .com, to my .co.uk has been bought, by a company that sells similar products???

Don`t know why they`re bought it, perhaps they are after a few lost soles who type in .com instread of .co.uk

My advise now, if you are registering a name, go for the full monte, and get the .com and .org

We get them here too- you can register your own name for about $40 per year, depending on where you go, and then you get these scams offering you every other variation of your name with hyphens, underscores, etc for around $400 per year.
The first time you get one it is very scary, till you realise it is a rort.

Thought I would reply to this again as I just had another call exactly like this today. I told the guy to "go away" (or words to that effect  ) and hung up. Just beware of this scam.

I've also decided to collect all the junk faxes I receive every day, stick them in a brown envelop and address it to the PO box number listed (by law) on the bottom of each fax. I'm leaving a stamp off the letter and writing on the envelope "postage to be paid by recipient".

Let's launch a campaign to try and get enough people doing this to swamp these companies with their own junk faxes (and get them paying the postage). Maybe then they'll stop trying to rip us all off.

Great idea Phil, i'll try that i have my number less than a month on the new workshop and get up to junk faxes aweek, not bad for a number just listed. i have actually contacted the nuisance call bureau who have listed my number with an agency that tries to control fax promotion copmpanies, they say that it will not be completely stopped but that say that 70% will but i think i'll follow Phil's suggestion.

Have seen the benefits of listing with the telephone and fax preference service

Has reduced calls and faxes tremendously

John

Good idea Phill

Very interesting that if you want their services you simply have to dial or fax their free number yet if you don't want their junk you have to fax back on a number where it will cost YOU  (hot)

Unwanted Phone & Fax Calls

Within a month of installing our phone and fax lines we were inundated with junk calls and faxes.

A mate of mine runs one of these low-cost telephone call companies. Apparently they - along with hundreds of others - pay BT thousands of pounds a year in return for all the details of businesses installing or adding phone lines. I found this out after he had the misfortune to be the sixth telesales canvasser to call us that particular day.

I complained to BT that when I ordered our lines they did not ask whether or not I wanted our details passing on to hundreds of telesales firms.

All they did is pass us onto the Telephone Preference Service and rather unkindly failed to give us a discount on our next bill.

The TPS and FPS are good, they do work. All telesales firms are supposed (!) to check their databases against the TPS and FPS. If your number is on the list, they ain't supposed to call you - and could be liable to a fine if they do. Takes a couple of months to kick in but well worth it.

What makes me angry is that the telephone companies (or in reality BT who control the infrastructure) pretend to be concerned and set up these tel. and fax preference services to keep us lot happy while still raking in a massive profit from these telesales companies . If they really had our interests at heart they would provide us with the facility to reject any incoming call (or fax) whos number was with held. But if they did that they would lose out on a lot of revenue... so they don't !!

I've actually phoned BT and asked for a facility to reject incoming calls (whose numbers are withheld) to be told I need to register with their tel. fax preference.

If I was a women being pestered with obscene phone calls they could do this - but when there is a profit to be gained they say it can't be done

You wouldn't believe the amount of junk faxes we get every day.
It sometimes even comes through at strange times like 6am - I've often been in the office this early and I'll hear the fax line ringing and think - oh here's some more crap!......lease a car....concert tickets......cheap holidays....etc etc.
If they have a number on them I often fax back a black A4 sized piece of vinyl that we have next to the fax machine!
Then I get home to the telesales calls.........................zzzzzzzzzzzz
Cheers
Joe
