how do i achieve a rusted look onto signage?

For a client of ours, we are looking for a nameplate with an 'old' look. We thought of hanging a rust plate on the wall. On the plate we would also like to attach milled characters in inox but we are doubting if that would be possible? Ruspaint (to give a new plate a rusted look) is not possible since under influence of rain the plate would keep on rusting... Does anybody have experience with rusted plates (where we can find this, if it's possible to attach something on it,...) or does anybody have another solution to realise a nameplate with an 'old' look?

Thank you in advance for your reactions!

Kind regards

We did some for an exhibition a few years ago, the only way we managed it in the end was to rust a mild steel plate with acid and water, completely dry it out in an oven, then spray with a clear lacquer to prevent further rusting. But the spraying must be the last thing to do after all the drilling and assembling.

Maybe look at some of the custom bike sites, I have seen a few Hogs on TV done with a rusted look.

I cut a fish and text out of steel some years back, let it rust, after brazing the edges (for colour effect). Then varnished it with marine two part varnish, three coats, and it is still the same after 5 years.

Best of luck.
