RIP???

Hey folks,
Are all Rip programmes created equal? I've just been given a couple of Mimaki machines and obviously will need to purchase a Rip. I've been playing with Vinyl Master Pro, and this has a Rip that comes with it. So before buying the full version I wanted to ask the question.

Not at all , the RIP is the heart of a digital printer - a slow rip or a Rip that doesnt profile 100% etc will not allow you to use the machine as designed or as specified. The difference between acceptable graphics and stunning is the RIP and the ICC profiles for the various media.
Mostly RIPS bundled with cheaper machines are barely ok - a decent RIP like a WASATCH will cost $3-4000 or more.
Whatever Mimaki bundle with their printers *should* work well , however something else might work better.
If you have multiple machines , you need a rip that allows you to use multiple machines - a lot of them dont.
Apart from your rip , you are going to need a puter that is blindingly fast unless you want to wait for the RIP for ever - yesterday I had my longest "rip" for a 3.6 gigabyte file , 13 minutes and that was a 2.8 gig processor - processor speed is very important and some RIPS can be very very slow.
To go into all the features of a RIP is a treatise in itself , but I would look at the WASATCH rip as it is regarded as one of the best and will allow you to do whatever you want with your machines www.wasatchinc.com
Signlabs Photorip is not too bad - Im pretty sure it will work with the Mimaki.
You say you were "given" the machines? what models are thay that they were given away? Are there problems with them ?

Hi Leeroy,

I know very little about RIPs but I am using the VinylMaster Pro Future Rip. It works absolutely fine and a Signlab expert who saw it said he was impressed. Having never used the Signlab one, or any others, myself I cannot compare. However, it's an absolute bargain and will probably be the only thing you need.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies, Yeah I was given these machines along with a couple of boxes of spare parts, inks and print heads. I've been told one works perfectly and the other needs some minor work. I won't know until I get them here.

rip

Hi Leeroy,

is the vmp rip and open rip, ie you can add profiles for other media and i think drivers for other machines, because this makes the rip a little future proof and ideal, however not many people i visit run with their cutting software rips, they invest in standalone rips, i think this is because they are faster working and also the flexiblity is greater when you want to alter the image output settings.
