why does Illustrator slice my files to un-editable sections?

Hi - Anyone out there able to tell me why Illustrator (9) randomly (and seemingly without warning) decides to slice your file up into un-editable sections from time to time.
I have used Illustrator for years (I tend to use version 9 because CS used to cause problems with my RIP) and because this tends not to happen too often I just haven't been bothered trying to find out what causes it.

I have looked in the help but no clues there.

Its very frustrating if you have spent hours on a design only to find all your text, graphics and placed files chopped up into bits (ESPECIALLY when you haven't finished).

The feeling I get is that it seems to flatten the file when saving it - it could be a memory thing or a setting that I am missing but I would appreciate it if any of you could throw some light onto this.

When you are saving your Illustrator files are you saving to a lower version of Illustrator then what you have? Because that could be the problem.

Hi Col,

As Jaclyn says, if you save to an earlier version of Illustrator, when you re-open the file it can split up any line of text into lots of annoying sections, even down to individual letters.

Not sure whether that's your problem though because I only get that happen on text - never on graphics, or even text once it is outlined.

I also have that sometimes, I just weld all the sections and the line disappears and forms a complete contour again.
