• ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL

Posted by Warren Beard on February 14, 2007 at 11:48 am

    Hi Guys

What % mix should I be using? I have seen some from 75% to 99.5%.

Where is the best place to buy from? I asked in local hardware stores and they all think I have lost the plot *hair*

Is this something that can be delivered in the post or does it have to be collect?

    Cheers

    Warren

Warren the best place to buy it is from a chemical company, you can get it from some chemists but it is expensive. Not sure about the regulations regarding delivery as the last time I bought some they wouldn’t deliver to a house so I had it delivered to a customers business unit. When I had my own unit there was never a problem. It is classed as a dangerous chemical so you will get COSHH documentation along with the delivery.

I would have a look through Yellow pages and contact some of the local Chemical supply companies.

    Just noticed this online.

    http://www.kaisertech.co.uk/link_pcbchemicals_pdf.htm

About 1/2 way down the page.

No idea if the prices are good or not as I always just buy meths!

    5 litres – £27.65

    25 litres – £89.55

Plus a higher than normal courier delivery as classified as HazChem.

    Hi Dave

So is Meths a suitable alternative to alcohol?

I phoned a chemical manufacturing company and when they asked how much I wanted I said 5L and she said, "OH, why don’t I send you a sample!" I said OK 😀

    Will wait and see

David those prices are about 3 times more than I paid for a 25 LTR barrel a couple of months ago, it is classed as a hazardous chemical which is why they wouldn’t deliver to my house I think.

    Thanks guys

Peter, I will try them thanks.

So is Meths not a suitable alternative then?

    ……..

Depends on what you are using it for.

Meths is, well methanol solution – so basically ‘alcohol’.

Good for degreasing & general cleaning and doesn’t eat paintwork or plastics…although it might stain it purple (mineralised type) :lol1: And it won’t eat the ‘spray bottle’ valves / seals.

Used IPA years ago, but I was getting wasted on it as it evaporates faster than meths.

You can get the pure stuff through electronics supply stores, perhaps even the smaller hobby shops. The 75% is typically for disinfecting cuts, whereas the 100% is used with industrial applications. For example, you would want to use the 100% for cleaning electronic contacts, so as to avoid leaving impurities on the contact surface.

I got my 1st IPA through the local chemist, next lot through a chemical supplies co.
It’s great for cleaning & de-greasing, also dissolves old glue after vinyl removal if left on for a while, then scraped off/wiped off before it’s had a chance to evaporate. Works better than tar & glue remover IMO.

Try Litho printing ink suppliers also. Some litho presses use IPA in there damping systems.

Lorraine, the only problem I have with using it to remove glue is that it makes the glue go all slimey like something that comes out of your nose when you have a cold !!!! (Sorry couldn’t think of another way to describe it)

I use it for pretty much everything and never had any problems at all, I must be honest though and say that I haven’t really tried much else as I was told that this was the stuff to use when I first started.

Rich, what do you pay for it from Print One if you don’t mind me asking? Peter said it came in different sizes but when I checked their website I couldn’t see it listed, they are revamping their site at the moment so maybe thats why

from print one its £20 + vat, it does last a long time, so unless you are using it by the bucket, print one do the best price for small quantities

anyway as rich says, its a lot cheaper than vodka, which is the next best thing

Of course he was joking… However, if you insist on drinking the stuff I’ve always thought it tasted best mixed with fresh orange 😕
