A dongle is usually a physical device that is needed to operate a system or piece of software. It’s one more step in theft prevention. Sometimes it is essentially a memory stick that plugs into a USB port containing code that the main program checks exists before it is operational.

It may also be a separate program that is not physically separate from a computer that is used in the same way but I’m not too certain if that is still called a dongle.

We run Omega Software and that uses a dongle. While you could load Omega on as many machines as you like, it will only work on the computer with the dongle in it. We have three licensed versions of Omega, but two are upgrades from the Graphix Advantage days, so we have 2 parallel port dongles and 1 USB dongle.

    TIP
Buy an extension lead and secure it with a couple of cable fixings to the underside of your desk, then plug the dongle into that. If someone breaks into your premises and steals your computer, not only will it save you from buying another £800 Omega dongle, but it also means you can pop into pc world or wherever, buy a new pc same day and carry on working, rather than been stranded for a several days.

Wholeheartedly agree Jill, dangling your dongle can be hazardous to your health if done in the incorrect social setting 😉 I see you’ve joined in with the ‘moving avatar’ thing 😀 Well smart 😀 Can’t wait to see Steve Thurlows 😮

    Cheers, Dewi

Steve MADE mine! Nik made me one too, Dewi….
Ask and maybe they will do one for you too!
But I still like that Florida Mugshot one of you from way back when.
I almost threw away my Dongle once when uninstalling a printer!
    Love…Jill
